Examples of over exposure, normal exposure, and under exposure.
Over Exposure â Highlights washed out â No detail - No digital information
Normal Exposure â Good detail in highlights and shadow areas
Under Exposure â Little or no detail in shadow area.
If you are going to error, itâs best to error in under exposing the image while retaining detail in the highlights. But you should stride to make a normal exposure.
Exposure Light Metering Patterns
There are three to four different types of metering patterns built into every DSLR camera.
Spot Metering Pattern
Use this metering pattern when you have a lighting situation where the light value is high in contrast. As in a scene that is lit with hard sunlight creating extremely bright highlights and deep dark shadows. This is where the spot meter is excellent in reading a small area of the highlight that measures the exposure value of the highlight. Metering for the brightest area will retain detail in the highlights of your scene. Your shadow areas will go darker but can be opened up by using the âfill lightâ slider in your editing software. This procedure will allow you to retain valuable detail in your highlights and shadows. (Refer to the sections on over, under, normal exposures)
Matrix Metering Pattern
Matrix metering is good in situation where the exposure meter will actually take different segments from different areas within your scene and blend the exposure values together to create a proper exposure. There is also another pattern that is very similar to the matrix. Itâs called an averaging metering pattern.
Center Weighted Metering Pattern
Use this metering pattern when you have a scene that is even in lighting. The meter reading starts in the center of the frame and then averages in the surrounding area. Like the examples shown. Center weighted metering pattern then takes in consideration the area around the center and gives you a proper exposure meter reading.
